1.
On the banks of the canal, no other mortal eyes to see save birds and thunderclouds, There you stripped to the skin and swam in the water alone. It covered you up to your chin, hiding your young form from my mind’s eye as the clouds rolled in. Awestruck, you listened to the thunder, nothing between you and the water. You told me generations later. I had not yet been born then, nor had you daughters, nor sons. I saw fields of the oil crops growing. Glowing gold in the fields of your home, under clouds that watched me like yours watched you: their great-granddaughters whose summer showers fall on the canals, the melt of last winter’s snows. Your words bathed me in the same water, senses present with no obstruction. And my blood runs through canals, the waters of Earth now flow in my veins: beauty and danger.

Teach me, my God and King, In all things Thee to see, And what I do in anything To do it as for Thee. A man that looks on glass, On it may stay his eye; Or if he pleaseth, through it pass, And then the heav'n espy. All may of Thee partake: Nothing can be so mean, Which with his tincture—"for Thy sake"— Will not grow bright and clean. This is the famous stone That changeth [turneth] all to gold; For that which God doth touch and own Cannot for less be told.

about

Some of the following is true.
Trebizond arose from the disruption of the Fourth Crusade and with the help of its Georgian allies, eventually commanded a wide swath of the lands surrounding the Black Sea.
From the beginning, Trebizond has been a multicultural polity and a cosmopolitan power. From its Hellenistic heartland it has assimilated Slavic, Caucasian and Turkic populations, as well as the Gothic colony on the Crimean Peninsula which included Saxon refugees from the Norman conquest. These "New Englanders" adapted their language to the native Gothic script, and through regular intercourse with the homeland, a method of writing in modern English with that alphabet has developed: the Reformed Gothic script.
Trebizond has exerted an influence on the world at large somewhat beyond its size, and several towns and counties in the United States bear its name, including a picturesque little town in Minnesota and a peak in Utah's Wasatch mountains.
Official histories will tell you that Trebizond was conquered by the Turks in 1461. You can believe that if you choose. Maybe we're reaching through the sands of time, or simply through layers of imagination, writing songs that aspire even to be palimpsests of a dream.
